Obtaining and using the Bilko software

How can I obtain the Bilko software?

Answer: The Bilko software is available to registered Bilko users and can be downloaded from the user area of the Bilko website. To obtain the software you must:

  1. Register on-line by following the register link on the top menu bar. Note: You will be asked to check your details. Do this, and click the submit button. An e-mail will be sent to you asking you to confirm your registration.
  2. Go to the Education Resources page and follow links to the material you want to download. If you just want the software, go straight to the Software page.
  3. On the relevant page, enter the e-mail address you used for registration, and click submit, to reveal a list of files you may download.
  4. At busy times, our FTP site may be slow to respond. When this happens your browser may time out and give a 'not available' message. If this happens try again a little later. If you still have problems, please let us know.

Do I have to pay for software or lessons?

Answer: No. Bilko is free to registered users. By installing the software you implicitly agree to the Licence agreement, which allows you to distribute the software to anyone you wish. You must not charge for the distribution of Bilko software and lessons.

Can I use the Bilko software for other applications than ocean and coastal remote sensing?

Answer: Yes Bilko has been developed primarily for ocean and coastal remote sensing, but the image processing routines can also be used for other application areas. The software does not have a digital elevation module (DEM) so geometric correction of land data may be problematic if the terrain is hilly.

With one or two exceptions (RA-2 altimeter data, USGS MapGen format) Bilko is not suitable for proecessing vector data.
