In Bilko images and associated information such as histograms, transects, filters and formulae for the processing of data (algorithms) are stored as separate file types, also known as Bilko documents. There are 10 such 'document' types, and you will need to know something about all of them to use Bilko effectively. In the main sections of the tutorial each of these will be described in detail, and you will see examples of how they may be used.

Using Help to find information about document types

A good starting point for information on each type is the Help folder called Document Types.

  1. Open Help from the menu bar and select Search from the drop-down menu.
  2. Type 'document types' as the word to be searched for and click on the 'List Topics' button.
  3. The list that appears should include a help file called 'Document Types'. Select this and click the 'Display' button. Links to information on the ten main document types will be displayed in the right frame of the help window.

Note: Hierarchical image documents are really just a type of image document, but because of their importance and complexity, they are given a separate entry in the Help program, making 11 links in all.

To find out more about the different document types in Bilko, briefly explore the links on the Document Type help page, and use the information to answer the questions below:

You may add this help page to your list of favourite help pages. To do this
  - select the Favourite tab on the help window,
  - check that the Current topic box contains the page you want, and
  - press the Add button.

The main sections of the Tutorial looks at the document types in more detail, and introduces you to how each may be used to help you display, process and analyse remote sensing images. When working your way through these sections, remember to consult the Help program frequently. This will help you get the most out of the different sections.
